Its best to keep the Work space out of the Master Bedroom. Sometimes the sight of piles of papers and bills can make it hard to relax. So if its possible try another location in the home. A childs room is okay,if they have space for a small desk. However if you need a Work space that can be used for not only homework but bill paying and you want it centrally located, here are five solutions.
Utilize the corner of a family room with a desk and display area. This can be custom made for your specific storage needs or "out of the Box" items. It can be as simple as a straight countertop with a file cabinet in-between two work areas. Or it can have rollout shelves behind closed doors that hide the printer and cpu.
An under-used closet can become Home Central. Start by clearing out the contents. Make three piles, one garbage, one to donate and one to keep. The items that are to be kept, can either go with like items in another location or place items in decorative containers to be stored at the top of the closet. Paint the inside of the closet and select your system based on budget. You can use a hollow core door stained as a countertop and a file cabinet underneath. Cork tiles, painted on the back wall or chalk board paint. You can also look at systems from Lowes or Conatiner store that have one hanging bar and all the componets hang from it, based on your closet size and needs.
A third idea is using a sofa table that has an open leg area with shelf. Decorative baskets can be used to store kids supplies, files for bill paying, calculator and stamps. A chair can be pulled up from the kitchen or dining room. Its making double duty of one piece. This is great for spaces where you are limited on floorspace.
A secretary style desk is an option that works in many different rooms. Its an all in one, self contained unit, it can be placed in an entry, kitchen, bedroom or dining room. There are so many styles to meet everyones decor. They have storage, filing and a worksurface that drops down. The best is it closes up and hides all.
If space is at an absolute minmium. A bulletin board decorated with fabric will be your Home Central, holding invitations, schedules and to do list. A magazine holder, wall hung, is placed on each side of the bulletin board. This is where each person has their own files to store their papers. A drop down work surface is mounted to the wall below. It folds neatly to the wall when not in use.
